Watercolor Mountains with Shelby Thayne

Layered Mountain Watercolor Painting with Shelby Thayne

Shelby will teach a step by step class to help you create your very own mini magical watercolor mountain art. She'll cover the basics of watercolor supplies, and skills including water control, color mixing, and more, all while walking you through everything you need to know and do to make your own layered mountain painting.

This class will be full of fun, play, and tons of creative encouragement. Together we'll put any not-good-enough fears to rest, and lean in to the beauty and growth found in the process of creating itself.

Our inspiration for this painting session comes from this wintery purple mountain scene. We'll recreate it as a mini 3 inch x 3 inch painting. You are welcome to bring your own inspiration as well. You’ll also have plenty of opportunity to ask any questions you have along the way.

Painters of all skill levels are welcome!

Bonus: Shelby will stay and paint an extra 30 minutes at the end of class for anyone who would like to (finishing at 3:30 PST).

Materials Needed:

To paint along with Shelby, bring the following supplies to class:

Watercolor paints: A variety of colors to play with. At a minimum, Shelby recommends having a set of primary colors (red/pink, a blue, and a yellow), and a purple. She'll be using Imperial purple by Daniel Smith and Payne’s Grey by Windsor and Newton. Good beginner watercolor paints include Sakura Koi Field Sketch paints, and Windsor and Newton paints.

Paintbrush(s): You can do everything with a single medium-sized round brush (around a size 10). If possible, Shelby recommends having three sizes: a small one for detail (round 1), a medium (round 8-10) and a larger one (round 14 or larger). The most common sizes Shelby paints with are round 14, round 8, and round 1.

Watercolor Paper: A good starting paper is Canson XL 140lb watercolor paper. Shelby uses this or Arches cold press 100% cotton paper. Make sure your paper is 140lb/300gsm. Have a large piece available for practice exercises, and cut a few pieces into approximately 3in x 3in squares for our finished paintings.

(Paper) Towels: something to dry your brush off on as we paint

Water: 2-3 cups of water

Palette or plate: a surface for mixing your colors. While a plastic palette will serve this purpose, paint will mix best on a ceramic surface.

Clipboard or cardboard: to tape your watercolor paper while working. This helps prevent excess warping from working with so much water.

Painter's tape: to tape down the paper while to minimize warping.

Helpful extras: Blow-dryer or heat gun -- definitely helpful to speed up the drying process, but not required.
